Amazon Offering Numerous Part-Time Positions As Hiring Plans Gather Pace

Amazon has disclosed that it has 30,000 part-time positions available in the United States. The online retail giant expects to fill the positions in the course of the coming year. This will form part of the hiring spree that was announced by the company earlier in the year.

Some of the part-time workers that Amazon is looking for includes virtual customer service agents who will be working from remote locations of their choice. The total number of work-at-home customer service positions is 5,000 while the 25,000 positions will be in warehouses belonging to Amazon. Part-time employees who are able to log in a minimum of 20 hours of work in a week will be eligible for benefits. Among the benefits that are open to these part-time workers include an opportunity to participate in the Career Choice program where a portion of their tuition gets paid for by Amazon in courses that are currently in demand.

“There are lots of people who want or need a flexible job — whether they’re a military spouse, a college student, or a parent — and we’re happy to empower these talented people no matter where they happen to live,” Amazon’s worldwide customer service vice president Tom Weiland, said in a statement.

Supporting veterans

According to Weiland, the work-at-home virtual customer service jobs have proved to be attractive to spouses of military personnel who don’t want to leave the workforce and at the same time have parenting duties. This is the case when the family faces relocation or the spouse gets deployed. Weiland also singled out military veterans suffering from an illness or those who are wounded, injured or who have mobility challenges as another demographic that had found these positions appealing.

The 30,000 part-time jobs consist of a bigger plan by Amazon to hire up to 100,000 workers in full-time positions in the United States in the coming one and a half years. These full-time jobs will come with full benefits. A majority of these jobs will be offered at various fulfilment centers spread across the country. There will also be positions in Amazon’s emerging business segments such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Great expansion

In the past few years, Amazon has greatly increased the size of its workforce. Six years ago the employee numbers at the Seattle, Washington-based online retail giant stood at 56,000. This figure was inclusive of part-time and full-time employees. Towards the end of 2016, the employee population had risen to over 340,000.
